Cherry Blossom Special is another work commissioned by NCI, this time to commemorate NCI’s 20th session in 1995. This piece for cello orchestra in four parts, is a crazy quodlibet utilizing the Japanese folk song Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) as a unifying melody throughout the piece. Other tunes used reflect the many shared loves between American and Japanese culture, including European folk songs, Beethoven and baseball. A Flaherty signature piece, loads of fun to perform.
