Carrie Lane Gruselle, one of our favorite arrangers, has produced this old favorite for cello quartet. Her thorough knowledge of cello technique means that her arrangements always lie well on the instrument and sound great. This Slavonic Dance is a perfect case in point: only Cello 1 requires thumb position and even that lies in our “home base” spot on the half-string harmonics. Cello 2 and 3 get up to fourth position. Cello 4 might be played in first position but a couple of simple shifts are recommended. The piece is lively, fun and quite accessible to student groups.
