Summer 2027 will mark the 52nd National Cello Institute — more than half a century of bringing cellists together to learn, perform, and share in a truly unique musical experience.
What makes the NCI so special is its focus. With an enrollment made up almost entirely of cello students, we are able to offer an extraordinarily comprehensive program while remaining one of the more intimate music institutes in the country. The result is a close-knit, welcoming environment with an incredible variety of classes, ensembles, and opportunities for players at every stage of their musical journey.
More than 150 cellists regularly attend the NCI, ranging in age from about 5 to 80 and in experience from students just beginning pieces like French Folk Song to advanced players tackling the major solo repertoire. Whatever your age or level, you’ll find classes and ensembles designed to challenge, inspire, and support you.
And the experience isn’t limited to cellists! Our sibling violin and viola program makes it possible for even more members of the family to participate together.

Taking place on a single day, the Winter Workshop is an intensive cello refresher and community learning experience, providing students 3 to 4 hours of classes during the day, culminating in an afternoon performance with the cello orchestra. Enrollment is generally around 50-60 students, with divisions into classes based on Suzuki book level. Several of our illustrious cello faculty make the trek to California to share their knowledge with us while we have an all-day cello extravaganza!
